The Pirates walked away winners on Wednesday afternoon after a pair of three-run home runs, courtesy of Jack Suwinski and Josh VanMeter, lifted them to a 10-5 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Greg Brown has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton said after the game that it was good to see the offense come alive after falling behind early on.
Suwinski’s home run proves that numbers aren’t always everything in baseball. While the rookie outfielder is hitting under .200 through 26 games this season, he is tied for second on the team in home runs with five. He also leads all National League rookies in that category.
In addition, he’s racked up a .700 slugging percentage over his last seven games played.
Shelton said that Suwinski is an exciting player to watch.
Shelton adds that keeping a positive mindset leads to success.
Suwinski wasn’t the only “Young Buc” who shined in the series and in yesterday’s finale. RHP Yerry De Los Santos entered the game in the ninth inning and struck out two hitters while allowing just one hit. Cal Mitchell, who the team called up prior to Tuesday night’s game, went 2-for-5 yesterday. He finished his first series with the Pirates going 3-for-9 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
The Pirates also reportedly recalled infielder Tucupita Marcano from Class AA Altoona after yesterday’s game. Marcano collected multiple hits in five of his last eight games with the Curve and had a .895 OPS in 28 games.
The Pirates have off today and will start a road trip on the West Coast tomorrow as they take on the San Diego Padres.
PIRATES INJURY NEWS:
In his weekly medical update, Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk spoke on multiple players, including outfielder Greg Allen, who has been out of action since Spring Training with a left hamstring injury.
Allen is scheduled to come off the 60-day injured list on June 6 and Tomczyk said that he will begin a rehab assignment within 7-10 days.
RHP Quinn Priester (oblique injury) pitched a live batting practice session yesterday. Tomczyk said Priester “should be on his way of getting back to affiliated ball soon.” He was scheduled to start the year with Altoona.
RHP Nick Mears made a rehab appearance with Low-A Bradenton last night. He tallied three strikeouts over one inning pitched and Blake Cederlind continues to build back his motion and strength following a UCL tear.
Outfielder Jake Marisnick is “slightly ahead” of schedule after undergoing surgery on his thumb and will resume advanced gripping activities.
General Manager Ben Cherington said earlier this week that last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick Henry Davis suffered a “small non-displaced fracture” in his wrist during his first game with Altoona. Initial imaging on his wrist came back negative but he was brought to Pittsburgh for advanced measures.
No timetable has been announced yet for his return.
