HERITAGE CONFERENCE
The 2022 Heritage Softball Championship belongs to the newcomer Cambria Heights Highlanders as they downed defending champion River Valley, 9-3, at Northern Cambria last night.
Jake Slebodnick has the recap from WCCS 101.1 FM and AM 1160.
Highlanders coach Drew Thomas said his team knew they had to put up runs if they wanted to beat River Valley.
This was Cambria Heights’ first year as a member of the Heritage Conference after leaving the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference last year, but Thomas said the goal stayed the same no matter what conference they play in.
Cambria Heights pitcher Jenna Serafin was dominant on the mound after tallying nine strikeouts while limiting the Panthers to three hits and three runs. In addition, she went 1-for-2 at the plate with a RBI single.
Thomas said Serafin was a major contributor to the program not just this year, but throughout her career.
Serafin said her teammates picked her up on both offense and defense.
Both teams now turn their attention to District VI playoffs as Cambria Heights, ranked as the No. 3 seed in Class 3A, will host No. 6 seed Forest Hills, while No. 7 seed River Valley travels to No. 2 seed Westmont.
