The second men’s major championship gets underway this week with the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Defending champion Phil Mickelson will not be participating in the tournament.
According to tournament organizers, Mickelson is keeping himself on hiatus from professional golf after he talked disparagingly about both the PGA Tour and the rival tour he helped start, LIV Golf. Charl Schwartzel will replace Mickelson in the field.
Bryson DeChambeau is withdrawing from the PGA Championship at Southern Hills after playing a practice round on Wednesday. DeChambeau posted on Twitter that he wants to make a full return when he is 100 percent ready to compete at golf’s highest level.
The 28-year-old has been out of action since early April, missing the cut at last month’s Masters, after carding a 12 over total in the first two rounds. He elected to have surgery on his left wrist to repair a fractured hook of the hamate bone.
Denny McCarthy was added to the field for the first round in lieu of DeChambeau’s absence.
