With their season officially in the books, the Penguins now turn their attention to the offseason with possible departures headlining everyone’s list of concerns.
The Pens are in danger of losing franchise cornerstones Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, both of which have been with the team since debuting in the 2006-07 season. In addition, the Penguins offseason checklist consists of resigning unrestricted free agents Bryan Rust — who won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh – Evan Rodrigues and Rickard Rakell, whom the Pens traded for during the season.
Coach Mike Sullivan was asked during yesterday’s end-of-season news conference if “new blood” could help improve the team next year. While he didn’t give an exact “yes” or “no” answer, he said there are plenty of things the team can do to improve.
Sullivan was also asked about the trio of Sidney Crosby, Malkin and Letang and how much impact they’ve had in the organization. He said they were “the definition of what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin.”
Sullivan also praised Rust for his contributions in his time in Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, Kris Letang said that any updates regarding any contract negotiations will remain private between him and General Manager Ron Hextall.
As previously mentioned, Rakell came over to the Penguins during this year’s trade deadline, and he said that he loves Pittsburgh and would.
Evgeni Malkin set the record straight in his portion of the conference. He addressed the multitude of rumors surrounding him regarding the next step in his career, and while he understands business comes first, he would like to retire a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Captain Sidney Crosby added that he hopes the trio of him, Malkin and Letang can stay together based on the success they’ve had over the years.
The NHL offseason is set to begin in early July starting with the NHL Draft on July 7 and 8, with the free agent signing period to follow on July 13.
In other Penguins news, forward Brian Boyle underwent successful knee surgery on Tuesday, Hextall announced.
Boyle was injured during Game Six of the NHL Playoffs and is expected to be out of action for six weeks.
