Jose Quintana dominated the LA Dodgers through six innings and the Pirates got home runs from Michael Perez and Jack Suwinski as the Bucs knocked off LA, 5-1.
Quintana shut out the Dodgers on two hits, striking out five and walking four in his six innings of work. He became the first Pirates starter to go six, the first to throw more than 100 pitches, and the first to earn a win this season. Dodgers starter Julio Urias gave up only two runs, but surrendered 11 hits in his six innings pitched.
It was the Pirates’ first win over LA in the last 17 games against them, dating back to July of 2018.
Manager Derek Shelton says Quintana was outstanding.
Shelton says the Pirates pitching was the difference in the game.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says the Pirates pitching and defense were tough.
Ke’Bryan had three hits for the Pirates. Bryan Reynolds, Michael Chavis, Yoshi Tsutsugo, Diego Castillo, and Ben Gamel all had two hits. Suwinski’s home run was the first of his career and Perez’s homer was his second in two games since his recall from Indianapolis.
Game two of the series is tonight at PNC Park. The Pirates will start Bryse Wilson, who is 0-1 with a 3.79 ERA, against Dodgers right-hander Tony Goselin, who is 2-0 with a sparkling 1.64 ERA. Airtime is 6:10 on WCCS, with the first pitch at 6:35.
ALTOONA CURVE
Finally home after two weeks on the road, Altoona opens a six-game series against Somerset, the Yankees Double-A farm team, and the Curve is expected to have Henry Davis behind the plate. The number-one overall draft pick last season was promoted to Altoona Sunday night after Pirates catcher Roberto Perez went down with a hamstring injury. Michael Perez was called up from Indianapolis to the big leagues, and Altoona sent catcher Carter Bins to Indy, opening up a spot for Davis with the Curve.
The Pirates’ farm director, John baker, said yesterday that the injury chain reaction had nothing to do with Davis’ promotion, but was instead “100 percent” due to Henry’s earning it with his performance at Greensboro, where he was hitting .341 with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 22 games.
Right-hander Luis Ortiz starts for the Curve tonight.
