The Steelers followed up the NFL Draft by signing ten undrafted free agents, including two running backs expected to vie for the backup job behind Najee Harris.
Duke’s Nataeo Durant and Oklahoma State’s Jaylen Warran signed with Pittsburgh. The other free agents signed post-draft are outside linebackers TD Moultry of Auburn and Tyree Johnson of Texas A&M; cornerbacks Chris Steele of USC and Bryce Watts of UMass; tackles Jordan Tucker of North Carolina and Jake Dixon of Duquesne; Alabama guard Chris Owens; and Michigan defensive lineman Donavan Jeter.
Former IUP wide receiver Irvin Charles has signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. At IUP, Charles caught 39 passes for 792 yards and 12 touchdowns, which was a team-high in 2021. Charles started at Penn State in 2015 as a 4-star recruit and played for three seasons before transferring to IUP.
The Steelers drafted two quarterbacks in the draft: Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and South Dakota State’s Chris Oladokun. With Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph already in the quarterback room, coach Mike Tomlin was asked at the post-draft news conference who will line up under center first when training camp begins.
With the draft now complete, the Steelers still have work to do to shape the roster before training camp, and that includes some decisions on veterans. Today, for instance, is the deadline to decide whether or not former top draft choice Devin Bush is offered his fifth-year option, or to let him play next season with free agency on the other end.
Outgoing general manager Kevin Colbert says the team realizes the deadline is here but their focus was on the draft.
Colbert also said the Steelers have not placed a deadline on what to do about defensive end Stephon Tuitt, who did not play last season due to a knee injury and his grief after the death of his brother.
