More funding has been secured for IUP’s Academy for Culinary Arts building in Punxsutawney.
Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Brian Smith announced that an additional $1 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant funds would be going to the building project. The money will be used to complete the construction of a new 45,000 square-foot education and multi-purpose commercial site in downtown Punxsutawney. The facility is expected to serve as the main educational and retail space for students and the community.
This is on top of a $500,000 federal grant recently announced by Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson, $1 million in RACP grant money secured in December of 2021 and $250,000 secured in 2019 by Senator Joe Scarnati. The RACP funds will be used specifically for capital costs, including part of the demolition, construction, renovation of the property and buildings where classes will be held, along with the permits and equipment necessary to move forward with the project.
The improvements are needed as the culinary program has outgrown its facilities at the Fairman Centre situated on West Mahoning Street. The new building will use donated properties adjacent to the current site.
