Penguins coach Mike Sullivan welcomed his team back to the ice at the Cranberry practice facility yesterday and the power play got a lot of attention. The Pens have only one goal in their last 20 chances and Sullivan said they just need to shoot the puck more instead of looking for the perfect play.
Defenseman Nathan Beaulieu practiced for the first time since being acquired March 21st at the trade deadline. He wore a white non-contact jersey. He’s not played a game since suiting up for Winnipeg on March 4th. He’s been out since then with an undisclosed injury. Beaulieu skated with Mark Friedman as a fourth defensive pairing. Sullivan did not have a timeline for his return to the lineup.
The Penguins have a rematch of Saturday’s game against the Boston Bruins coming tomorrow night. They lost to the Bruins, 2-1, in that game and Sullivan says they need to find another gear, especially in a game that will probably not have a lot of scoring chances.
Sullivan has often remarked about how Sidney Crosby leads by example. He said yesterday that happens both on and off the ice.
Winger Bryan Rust says the Penguins have not been as sharp as they need to be lately.
Rust says the Penguins offense needs to be more consistent and if they start scoring goals, the other aspects of the team’s game will come together.
The Penguins yesterday announced that next year’s jerseys will have a sponsor patch for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. The NHL next season will allow sponsor patches for the first time ever.
