Flu activity has picked up over the last few weeks in Pennsylvania.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, seasonal flu activity is at moderate levels, after being at the low levels at the start of the year. Since mid-February, the department has reported increases in the number of lab-confirmed flu cases across the state. Currently, 60,592 lab-confirmed flu cases have been reported across Pennsylvania as of the week ending April 9th. 57,130 cases are confirmed Type A flu, while 3,415 are type B, while another 47 are unidentified. That represents a jump of about 5,000 cases over the last week.
The number of lab-confirmed flu cases in Indiana Couunty is 414. 361 of them are type A flu, while 53 cases of type B flu were reported.
Emergency room visits associated with flu-like illnesses are similar to last week across Pennsylvania, and are currently below the state-wide average. 52 flu-related deaths have been reported this flu season so far, with 34 of them in people 65 or older, 11 in the age group 50-64, six in the 19-49 age group, and one death of someone 18 years of age or younger.
