The Penguins couldn’t get out of their own way yesterday, falling apart mentally and handing the Washington Capitals a 6-3 win at PPG Paints Arena. It was the Pens’ fourth straight loss.
Bryan Rust scored to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead 45 seconds into the game with his 24th goal of the season, but they gave the lead up almost as quickly as they got it, surrendering the puck in their own zone and setting up the Caps’ Marcus Johansson for a goal just sixteen seconds later.
Trailing 2-1 in the second period, the Penguins got goals from veterans Jeff Carter (his 17th) and Brian Boyle (his 10th) to take a 3-2 lead, but then they took three straight penalties, giving up four unanswered goals and being outshot in the third period, 19-7.
The Penguins try to rebound from the loss this afternoon (4:00; 3:00 airtime on 92.5 FM U92) against Nashville.
