It’s opening day for Major League Baseball, and while some games have already been postponed, it looks like the Pirates and Cardinals will be able to go, with a gametime temperature of 54 degrees. The forecast calls for a slight chance of rain, increasing cloudiness, and winds gusting as high as 31 miles per hour when Adam Wainwright throws the first pitch at 4:15 PM Eastern.
The Pirates yesterday rounded out their roster by reportedly signing outfielder Jake Marisnick and catcher Andrew Knapp. The team did not officially announce it, but it appeared in an article on the Pirates’ website.
Knapp will back up Roberto Perez at catcher. He was the Phillies’ backup catcher the last three seasons before signing a minor league deal with the Reds in December. He was released by Cincinnati on Sunday.
The pregame for Pirates baseball this afternoon is 3:50 on WCCS, FM 101.1 and AM 1160.
The Pirates’ Indianapolis Triple-A team played the organization’s first game of the season last night, falling 4-1 to Omaha. Cal Mitchel homered for Indy. Mason Martin and Canaan Smith-Njigba each had two hits and Travis Swaggerty had the only other hit. Oneil Cruz was 0-for-3 and Rodolpho Castro 0-for-4.
Altoona opens its season tomorrow night hosting Harrisburg at PNG Field.
