The Penguins get their rematch with the Colorado Avalanche tonight at PPG Paints Arena, but it’s anybody’s guess who will be on the ice tonight, as three guys missed practice due to illness, and injured wingers Jason Zucker and Brock McGinn remained off the ice. Zucker was hurt last Thursday in Minnesota and coach Mike Sullivan said yesterday that he’s feeling much better, but they will know more today. McGinn is on long-term injured reserve with a hand injury.
Kasperi Kapanen, Danton Heinen, and Anthony Angello all were out with non-covid illness yesterday. The Pens added rookie forward Filip Hallander from Wilkes Barre-Scranton on an emergency recall.
Sullivan says not having a full complement of players forced him to adjust his game prep for tonight.
With Zucker absent on Saturday against the Avalanche, Sullivan chose to put third-line center Jeff Carter on Evgeni Malkin’s wing on the second line. He says Carter has the versatility to bring some muscle to Malkin’s line.
Teddy Blueger replaced Carter as the third line center on Saturday and Brian Boyle took over for Blueger centering the fourth line.
After the Avalanche tonight, the Penguins visit the Rangers again at Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday. The pregame for Pens/Avs on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel airs tonight at 6.
