The Penguins got caught in an avalanche yesterday in Denver, twice giving up goals just seconds after tying the game and falling to the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2.
Trailing 1-0, the Pens Sidney Crosby tied the game with his 26th goal of the season at the 14:46 mark of the second period. But just 20 seconds later, Colorado retook the lead on a slap shot goal by Nicolas Aube-Kubel.
In the third period, Penguins defenseman Mike Matheson carried the puck into the Avalanche zone, passed it away, then circled behind the net and came out on the other side, taking a feed from Jake Guentzel and lifting a wrister into the net to tie it again, 2-2. But 27 seconds after that, Avs defenseman Devon Toews collected a deflected carom off the back board that went directly onto his stick, shuttling the puck past Tristan Jarry for the game-winning goal.
The Pens and Avalanche will meet again on Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena.
