Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of his NFL coaching colleagues took part in a mass media conference yesterday at the owners’ meetings in Palm Beach, Florida.
Tomlin addressed a variety of issues, including the hiring of minority coaches. He said he wants to see action instead of talk.
On changing overtime rules, which could come up for a vote today, Tomlin said he prefers old-fashioned sudden death, but understands that is never going to return. He didn’t favor one of the proposals over any other, but said he does not want different sets of overtime rules for the regular season and the postseason.
As to his team, Tomlin says he knows people are making a big deal about his four visits with draft-eligible quarterbacks at their pro days last week. But he says he’s just interested in what’s out there for the future.
Tomlin says he’s very aware that the other teams in the AFC, and especially the AFC North, have made big moves this offseason. He says it excites him to look at the fight ahead of the Steelers.
The coach also talked about the enormous potential of running back Najee Harris moving into the second year of his career.
The Steelers yesterday bolstered their outside linebacker depth by signing former Browns and Eagles outside rusher Genard Avery. The 27-year-old started 12 games for the Eagles last season and played in 16, with 43 tackles, including one sack and four tackles for loss.
Both the Steelers and Kraft Heinz released statements yesterday saying they are negotiating on the potential renewal of their naming rights agreement for the Steelers’ stadium, which has been named Heinz Field since it opened in 2001.
