The Pirates and Tigers played to a 6-6 tie yesterday in Lakeland, Florida. Second baseman Hoy Park finally made his Spring Training debut after being delayed by positive tests for covid first in South Korea and then on his arrival in Bradenton. Park homered on his first swing of the game. Shortstop Oneil Cruz had two hits and catcher Michael Perez had a two-run home run.
Mitch Keller returns to the mound today against the Phillies. He was removed from his first start last Saturday after he was hit in the thigh by a line drive.
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that pitchers Miguel Yajure and Max Kranick are feeling great in their bullpen side sessions. Neither of them have pitched in a game yet. Yajure is recovering from a lumbar spine injury and Kranick suffered right forearm tightness throwing during the lockout.
The Pirates will go to the arbitration table with center fielder Bryan Reynolds rather than negotiate on a new contract. Reynolds asked for $4.9 million in arbitration while the Pirates offered $4.25 million. Reynolds said yesterday that the Pirates never made him an offer on a long-term contract during the offseason. Amazingly, the Pirates don’t have a single player on a major league contract beyond this season.
