The Wolf Administration announced Wednesday that another form of naloxone is able to be used in the fight against opioid overdoses.
Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson announced that her standing order allowing members of the public and first responders to obtain naloxone from their local pharmacy was expanded to include a form of eight milligram naloxone nasal spray. The medicine gained approval from the Food and Drug Administration last year as a method to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
The standing orders for naloxone have been in place since 2014, and since then, lower dose nasal sprays and auto-injector versions of naloxone have been available for the public through the standing order. Those who want the naloxone just need to print out a copy of the standing order and present it to their pharmacist to receive the drug.
