The pace of flu cases in Pennsylvania and Indiana County held steady over the last week.
A total of 1,431 new flu cases were reported over the last week, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed cases of influenza in Pennsylvania to 33,881. A total of 1,349 new cases of Type A flu were reported in that period, bringing the statewide total of Type A cases to 31,119. Another 82 new cases of Type B flu were reported, bringing that total to 2,742, and 20 cases are listed as unclassified or Type U.
In Indiana County, ten lab-confirmed cases if Flu were reported, bringing the total to 222 confirmed cases in the county. All ten of those cases were Type A flu, bringing that total to 174. A total of 48 total cases of Type B flu have been reported since the start of flu season.
Statewide, 31 deaths have been attributed to influenza, an increase of only one from last week. That one new death was reported in someone 65 or older. That group has seen the most flu-related deaths this year so far, with 19 reported. Seven deaths were reported in the 50-64 age group, and five deaths were reported so far in the 19-49 age group. No pediatric influenza deaths have been reported so far this year.
While flu activity has been listed as moderate in Pennsylvania and across the nation, the stats likely represent just a portion of the total number of flu cases in the state, as people may not go to the doctor to get tested, or the doctor diagnoses them with flu without getting tested.
