Two months after Governor Tom Wolf created the Pennsylvania Broadband Development authority, the group held its first meeting on Tuesday.
The goal of the authority is to expand broadband internet access to unserved and underserved areas of the commonwealth. Wolf said the authority will manage at least 100 million in federal funding for broadband expansion.
The authority will also be able to apply for a part of $42 billion in federal aid which is also being made available to states for broadband development. One of the authority’s members, Representative Pam Snyder, said it was important for the group to get more than the minimum amount of federal funding that will be available for broadband development.
At least 500,000 Pennsylvania residents lack access to broadband or high speed internet.
