State police in Westmoreland County are asking people to be on the lookout for a few suspects who are passing counterfeit money.
Troopers say that a man and a woman whom they have not been able to identify have been going to various stores in the region and use counterfeit $20’s and $50’s to purchase items. Last month, police released pictures of one of the suspects. The man in this case was seen in surveillance video at the Walmart on Route 22 in nearby Salem Township. He tried to pass a counterfeit $50, but was caught by a store employee before he fled. The man was able to get away from the store in a Jeep Renegade of unknown year and unknown registration.
This is the latest report of counterfeiting in the region. Back in December, Blairsville Borough police reported that there were fake $100 bills passed at the Tractor Supply and Dollar General stores in the borough on separate occasions. Also in December, a fake $100 was passed at the Sally Beauty Supply store in the Walmart plaza in White Township.
Anyone with information on the counterfeiting is asked to call state police at the Kiski Valley Barracks at 724-697-5780.
