After a week off, the Penguins returned to action last night at Boston and came away with a win, but it was marred by an attack by the Bruins’ Brad Marchand on Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry.
Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan wasn’t happy with the sloppy start for the Pens, but liked the way they held together.
Sullivan says the Penguins have to be ready to go from the opening faceoff to avoid falling behind.
Marchand and Jarry had been involved in an incident as the teams were leaving the ice at the end of the second period. As Jarry was about the flip a puck over the glass to a fan, Marchand skated by and knocked the goalie’s stick aside. Then with 25 seconds left in the game, Jarry covered the puck after a skirmish in front of his net and Marchand kept poking at it. Jarry said something to Marchand, who skated in and punched Jarry in the jaw area of his mask. Then he skated by as he was being escorted off the ice and jabbed his stick in Jarry’s face. Marchand was given a match penalty and a two-minute minor, and will very likely be suspended by the league.
The Penguins were tight-lipped about the incident, but Bruins’ coach Bruce Cassidy was critical of his veteran star, saying it was a “lack of discipline” and “he’s got to control his emotions.” A match penalty carries with it an automatic league suspension, which would be Marchand’s second of the season and the seventh of his career.
