ESPN and the NFL Network both reported yesterday that the Steelers will name senior defensive assistant and secondary coach Teryl Austin their new defensive coordinator, replacing the retired Keith Butler. Austin is a native of Sharon and a former Pitt star. He’s previously been the defensive coordinator in Cincinnati and Detroit.
Super Bowl week arrives with the Cincinnati Bengals and L.A. Rams preparing for Sunday’s championship game. The Rams get to play in their own stadium, so they are already there, but the Bengals will not go to Los Angeles until tomorrow.
Besides the normal bruises and sprains that NFL players have this late in a season, both teams will probably play on Sunday without top tight ends. The Bengals’ CJ Uzomah and the Rams’ Tyler Higbee both suffered knee injuries in their conference championship wins.

The Miami Dolphins have hired 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their new coach. The Houston Texans are finalizing a deal to make former Bears coach Lovie Smith their new head coach. He was the Texans’ defensive coordinator last season.
