On Monday night, the Homer City fire department opened its doors to accept donations for a family displaced by fire on Sunday, and the community turned up in droves to make donations.

Nine fire crews were called out early Sunday morning to battle the fire at the home of Matt Blystone and Tonya Gibbons at the corner of Center and Beech Streets. Both Blystone and Gibbons, along with their two children, were able to get out, but their belongings were destroyed in the fire.
When they got back to the station, Homer City assistant fire chief Joe Iezzi, Jr. started an effort to get the family the items they needed, as they were able to make it out only with the clothes on their backs. On Monday, the fire department opened its doors and received donations ranging from adult and children’s clothing, toys for both children, and household items they will need moving forward. The number of items donated was so great, it filled the social room of the fire hall. Iezzi was proud of the generosity of the Homer City community.
Homer City Fire Department will continue to accept items and gift cards for the family. Anyone interested can contact the fire department on the department’s Facebook page.
Money is also being accepted for the family through a GoFundMe account. You can find the link to that account by clicking below.
