PennDOT has announced that a project on Route 422 in Armstrong County will move forward thanks to money from the federal Surface Transportation Program.
The $24.8 million will go towards the Margaret Road Intersection Improvement Project, which will improve the existing intersection, sight distance and geometrics along the Route 422 corridor between Indiana and Kittanning, and will incorporate a new two-span steel girder bridge and a concrete box culvert. The project will replace an existing four-way intersection with a T-style intersection about 1600 feet from the existing intersection.
The project is expected to cost close to $25 million. It is in the final planning stages, and construction is expected during the 2023 and 2024 construction seasons.
This is part of the ongoing Route 422 expansion between Kittanning and Indiana. Several years ago, Indiana County Commissioners made a contribution of funds to help with a prior phase of the Route 422 widening project.
