A bill put forward by State Representative Jim Struzzi concerning fentanyl test strips is making its way through the House Judiciary Committee.
The committee held a hearing on Monday on House Bill 1393. The bill would legalize fentanyl test strips for personal use only. Struzzi said that there is a need for this bill.
Struzzi added that fentanyl is often added to heroin to increase its potency without people’s knowledge. Mixes of fentanyl and heroin have caused many overdoses and deaths in Pennsylvania. Acting PA Physician General Dr. Denise Johnson talks about how dangerous fentanyl is.
Struzzi said that yesterday’s hearing was the first step in bringing the bill to a committee vote. If it passes the committee, it will then go to the full house for a vote. Struzzi said that he is not condoning drug use with the passage of this bill, but is focused on preventing overdose deaths.
