With a final vote coming before the end of the month, the state’s Legislative Reapportionment Commission has a series of public hearings this week to take public comment on the preliminary maps for the new House and Senate districts in the General Assembly. On Thursday and Friday the hearings will be live-streamed from Harrisburg.
Under the plan, Indiana County’s House representation will be divided among two districts – the 62nd and 66th – rather than the current four. The 59th and 60th would no longer have their small portions of Indiana County.
In the Senate, the 41st District of Senator Joe Pittman would continue to include all of Indiana and Armstrong counties. It would add the Punxsutawney school district in Jefferson County and a significant portion of northern Westmoreland County, while Butler County would no longer be part of the district.
You can get a look at the current and proposed maps by visiting redistricting.state.pa.us and you can offer public comments at the hearings by registering in advance at the same website. You may also offer written comments, again at the website resdistricting.state.pa.us.
