The flu is becoming more prevalent in Pennsylvania and in Indiana County as well with significant jumps in the number of lab-confirmed flu cases.
In Indiana County, there have been 93 reported flu cases since the start of the 2021-2022 flu season. That’s an increase of 27 cases over the last week. 71 cases of type-A flu have been reported in Indiana County, an increase of 17 over the last week. 22 cases are type-B flu, which is five more than last week.
Across the state, 17,335 cases of flu have been reported. That represents 4,385 new flu cases over the last week. Type-A remains the most prevalent in the commonwealth, with a total of 16,093 cases reported since the start of the flu season. That includes 4,253 new cases from the last week. 130 new cases of type-B flu were reported in the state, bringing the total to 1,232. There are also 10 cases of what has been classified as type-U flu.
Eleven people have died from influenza this season so far, and emergency department visits for flu-related illness increased slightly across the state over last week. It also remains higher than where it was last year at this time.
The PA Department of Health reminds everyone that the stats represent possibly just a fraction of the actual cases of influenza as these represent positive flu tests that were reported to the department. This is because many people don’t go to the doctor with flu symptoms or the cases are not tested or reported.
