The federal government is sending “covid-19 strike teams” to help Pennsylvania’s hospitals deal with another surge of in-patient covid cases being cared for across the commonwealth.
Acting State Health Secretary Keara Klinepeter says in a news release says they are working to determine the exact locations to which the strike teams will be sent and any additional resources that will be provided.
The state’s 14-day average of patients hospitalized with covid-19 was at 4,539 as of yesterday, with the new daily record set last week at nearly 14,000 new positive cases. That, of course, comes in large part because the number of people getting tested is also rapidly increasing.
At IRMC, the latest statistics are for last Friday, when there were 20 covid in-patients, eight of them in the ICU. Sixteen of the cases are unvaccinated people, including all eight in intensive care, and all eight of those patients were on a ventilator.
The number of hospitalizations is expected to increase again, as it generally takes about five days after infection for people to decide to seek hospital care, and last weekend’s Christmas will soon have an impact on Pennsylvania’s covid numbers.
