2021 is not even over yet, but Pennsylvania’s new Acting Secretary of State says the 2022 Spring Primary election might have to be delayed because of the deadlines in place for the state’s new congressional and legislative maps.
Veronica Degraffenreid says the schedule put forth by the Legislative Reapportionment Commission does not meet the January 24th date needed for counties to update voter registration records and assign voters to new districts so candidates can begin gathering voter signatures for inclusion in the primary. A state court ruling gives the Commission until January 30th to come up with an acceptable plan, but that is six days after Degraffenreid’s deadline, and even that appears unlikely because of the inevitable court battle that will ensue.
The Primary is scheduled for May 17th, but leaders in both chambers of the General Assembly acknowledge that it might have to be delayed.
