A group of voters has filed a lawsuit against state officials concerning the redrawing of the congressional district map.
Reports say that the lawsuit claimed the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Governor Tom Wolf did not follow through in their duties to create new congressional districts based on the 2020 Census results and is asking Commonwealth Court to intervene and draw a new map. The lawsuit names acting Secretary of the Commonwealth Veronica Degraffenreid and director of the state Bureau of Election Services and Notaries Jessica Mathis. The lawsuit alleges that Wolf and state congress are not in agreement over the map, and with the state General Assembly adjourned until January of 2022, the state will miss a deadline of the end of this month to redraw the map for 2022 elections to proceed on time.
In the 2020 census, Pennsylvania’s population of 13 million grew slower than other states by 2.4 percent over the last decade, which results in a reduction of one seat in U.S. Congress.
