Remember when the Rooneys said “Let Dallas be America’s Team- we want the Steelers to be Pittsburgh’s team?”
That philosophy may be changing because the Steelers were one of NFL six teams awarded rights to market themselves in Mexico yesterday.
In essence the agreement allows the Steelers to treat Mexico as something of a home territory- “in-person and digital marketing, corporate sponsorship sales, fan events and activations, youth football activities, merchandise sales and co-marketing relationships with other sports and entertainment properties in the market.”
The other five teams awarded Mexico are ones you’d primarily expect; both Texas teams, Arizona, Kansas City, and the Los Angeles Rams, but the Steelers were interestingly given Mexico ahead of the Chargers.
The Steelers have a following south of the border. They played a preseason game in Mexico City in 2000 against Indianapolis that drew roughly 100,000 fans.
