No third period collapse for the Penguins last night, as they handed New Jersey its 12th loss in the Devil’s last 13 games.
The Penguins won, 5-1, with goals by Sidney Crosby, Cody Ceci, Bryan Rust, Teddy Blueger and Kasperi Kapanen, who returned to action after missing the last 13 games with a foot injury.
Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan said Sidney Crosby is a true team leader.
Crosby said the Penguins got a lot of energy from goaltender Tristan Jarry, who was solid from the start.
Crosby says the Penguins needed the points, as they are one point out of first place in a tightly-packed NHL East.
The win puts the Penguins into a second-place tie with the Islanders, who earned a point in a 1-0 shootout loss to the first-place Capitals. Elsewhere in the East, the fourth-place Bruins won as well, 5-1, over Buffalo, while the Flyers beat the Rangers, 3-2.
Sullivan did not say anything about injured center Evgeni Malkin yesterday but did say that injured winger Brandon Tanev has resumed skating. Malkin is out with a lower body injury thought to be a knee. Tanev is out with an upper body injury.
The Penguins meet the Devils again tomorrow at 12:30 and the Bruins on Sunday at 3:00. Both games will be heard on U92.5 FM and the U92.5 Sportschannel.
