The Pittsburgh Pirates opened the 2021 regular season on Thursday with a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Ke’Bryan Hayes launched a 410-foot home run to left to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and Adam Frazier would add insurance in the second and seventh innings by driving in two runs off a double and a single. Jacob Stallings also drove in a run after doubling to center in the fifth.
On the mound, Chad Kuhl threw three scoreless innings while six relievers allowed just one hit in the remainder of the game. Duane Underwood Jr. and Sam Howard each struck out the side and Richard Rodriguez fanned two in the ninth, earning him his first save of the season.
The Pirates and Cubs return to Wrigley Field on Saturday after an off day on Friday. Tyler Anderson will make his debut for the Pirates while Jake Arrieta gets his first start of the season for Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. and airtime is 1:55 on WCCS FM 101.1 and AM 1160.
