The Pirates struggled offensively as they fell to the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-0, in Clearwater Friday afternoon.
Phillies’ outfielder Bryce Harper pounced on starter Chad Kuhl in the first inning by launching a two-run home run to left field. Former Pirate outfielder Andrew McCutchen would add the final tally in the fifth after pulling a Blake Cederlind sinker over the left field fence.
For the Pirates, their only two hits came from non-roster invitee Wilmer Difo and outfielder Travis Swaggerty, who each had a single. Meanwhile, Wil Crowe and Edgar Santana combined for two strikeouts while only giving up two hits in three innings of relief.
With the loss, the Pirates return to LECOM Park tomorrow with a spring record of 2-3-1, and they are set to take on the New York Yankees where two familiar names in Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon are scheduled to pitch. Airtime on WCCS 101.1 FM and AM 1160 is 1 p.m.
