Indiana-based state police have issued an arrest warrant for an Armstrong County woman accused of stealing from a White Township woman.
Police say the 80-year-old victim, whose identity is not being released, received a copy of a $2,500 check drawn from her account, made out to 45-year-old April L. Kovach of Rural Valley. Kovach was working for the victim as a home healthcare aid at the time. The victim reviewed her personal bank statements and discovered eight fraudulent ATM withdrawals totaling $3,899.25. The first of those withdrawals was on August 25th of last year.
Police began investigating in September and on October 26th, they served a search warrant on Kovach’s bank, where records showed that the $2,500 check had been deposited on September 3rd, and several cash deposits had been made within the timeframe of the ATM withdrawals.
Troopers also obtained video surveillance showing Kovach making a $2,500 deposit and using the victim’s debit card at a White Township ATM.
Kovach is charged with 27 felony offenses, including eight counts each of unauthorized access of a device, theft by deception, and identity theft, as well as single counts of forgery, theft by taking, and receiving stolen property. The charges were filed Tuesday before District Judge Susanne Steffee.
Kovach is white, about 5-feet-4-inches tall and 110 pounds, with blue eyes and black hair. Police have not been able to contact her and encourage anyone who may know her whereabouts to call them at 724-357-1960.
