Drivers using the PA Turnpike will soon see an increase in tolls that was approved over the summer, and drivers who do not use the E-Z Pass program will see the highest toll increases.
Over the summer, the PA Turnpike Commission approved a 6% hike for those using the E-Z pass program, but those who would pay using the state’s new Toll By Plate program will see a 51% increase in tolls. This marks the 13th consecutive year that the turnpike commission will raise toll rates. The hikes are due to the Turnpike Commission’s annual $450 million transit payment to PennDOT, according to commission officials, and the larger increase for Toll By Plate is due to the cost of collecting tolls through the that program.
For the average driver using E-Z Pass, the toll will increase from $1.50 to $1.60, but for Toll By Plate customers, tolls will go from $2.50 to $3.90. The full toll schedule can be found on the Turnpike Commission’s website, www.PATurnpike.com.
The new rates go into effect at midnight tonight.
