The federal Covid-19 relief bill that was signed into law by President Trump earlier this week includes some protections for insurance consumers.
Pennsylvania’s Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman said that the legislation provides protections against surprise balance billing. That often happens when a person receives services from a healthcare provider that is not in their network.
The protections in the federal Covid-19 relief bill will take consumers out of the debate concerning costs and will create a process for insurers and providers to negotiate costs directly. Altman said that this is a major victory for consumers.
She added that the disagreement over how much an insurance company would reimburse an out-of-network provider for services is not one that should be a consumer’s responsibility to negotiate.
