State prisons have been hotbeds of Coronavirus activity, and SCI Pine Grove in Indiana County has seen its share so far.
As of yesterday, the state correctional institution in Indiana County has administered 579 Covid-19 tests for inmates since the start of the pandemic. From the results, 141 of those cases were classified as “active positive,” 321 inmates tested negative for Covid-19 and another 117 are pending. Eleven other active positive cases at the state prison have been reported among the prison staff.
There have been no recorded deaths due to Covid-19 at the prison, that according to the State Department of Corrections Covid-19 dashboard.
In a prior statement, Department of Corrections Press Secretary Maria Bivens said that the department takes Covid-19 very seriously and has a comprehensive plan to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the state prison system, including reducing the inmate population with “reprieves.” Three prisoners have been released from SCI Pine Grove, with 916 prisoners remaining in prison.
