Indiana County firefighters had an extremely busy weekend, battling structure fires in Clymer, Young Township, and in Bolivar.
The most extensive damage was to a home on Market Street in Bolivar, between 5th and 6th streets. A home was destroyed and the next door neighbor’s home sustained extensive damage to its siding as firefighters worked to save it from also catching fire.
The initial call came at 12:30 AM Sunday, with Clyde firefighters called to assist numerous Westmoreland County units. The home was just a couple of blocks away from the Bolivar fire company. Clyde, Blairsville, and Black Lick were sent for a rekindle shortly after 5 AM.
The fire in Young Township involved the old Valley Inn, along Route 286. There was reportedly forced entry into the building, which has been vacant for a number of years. The initial call was at 11:03 PM Saturday, for firefighters from Iselin/West Lebanon, Coal Run/McIntyre, and Saltsburg fire companies, who were soon joined by Tunnelton, Apollo, and Elderton. Iselin/West Lebanon and Coal Run/McIntyre were called for a rekindle at 8:01 AM.
The fire in Clymer was at a home along Dixon Road. The Clymer, Commodore, and Cherryhill Township fire companies were dispatched along with the Cambria County Rapid Intervention Team. It was a small fire under the porch of the home. Firefighters put it out and then ensured that it hadn’t spread elsewhere in the house.
