With September approaching, the deadline for the Pennsylvania Game Commission to gather public wild turkey surveys is also nearing.
Participants are asked to report all sightings of wild turkey from July 1st to August 31st, and the data collected from these surveys will go towards determining total productivity and allow us to compare long-term reproductive success with other northeastern states, according to Game Commission wild turkey biologist Mary Jo Casalena.
All forms of turkey, including gobblers and hens with or without broods, can be accounted for, and many factors will affect wild turkey productivity. Some factors including spring weather, habitat and previous winter-food abundance.
The turkey population in PA hovered near 280,000 birds in the early 2000s due to restoration tactics, but sharply declined below 204,000 since 2011.
The final day of survey collection will be Sept. 6th.
