APSCUF’s president on Thursday warned the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education about the potential risks of going back to face-to-face instruction.
The union that represents faculty members at the State System of Higher Education is recommending that classes be done remotely. As of right now, only five schools are doing that. Those are California, Clarion, Edinboro, Millersville, and West Chester Universities. IUP is with East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Slippery Rock with having 75 percent of their classes online and the remaining 25 percent of classes being held in person. The remaining schools, Bloomsburg, Cheyney, Kutztown and Shippensburg, will use a blend of remote, hybrid, and in-person classes. In fact, Cheyney has already started their school year.
Dr. Jamie Martin said in a statement on Thursday that many of their members believe that when students return to campus for in-person classes that there will be a spike in the number of cases of Covid-19 on some campuses and she is worried that those cases will spread into the communities where the universities are located.
All 14 of the state-owned universities are re-opening for the fall semester, with Cheyney already starting classes. Martin said that Cheyney is not requiring six feet of social distancing, but said that it should only occur when it is feasible, and she said it demonstrated “a lack of concern, and perhaps even disdain – for faculty and students.”
