The Pirates were held off the scoreboard for seven innings and the Cubs were able to rack up the runs as the Cubs beat the Bucs 6-3 last night at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Chicago jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings, but in the eighth, the Pirates started a comeback as Jerrod Dyson hit an RBI single to score Gregory Polanco to get the pirates on the board. Anthony Rizzo would give the Cubs two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Another comeback try started in the top of the 9th, as Josh Bell hit a solo home run off of reliever Craig Kimbrel, and Colin Moran hit a solo homer of his own later in the inning, but by then, the comeback was too little too late.
Trevor Williams took the loss for the Pirates. He gave up three runs on four hits and a home run in 4 and 2/3rds innings, but struck out six. Yu Darvish of the cubs got the win with a six-inning performance, giving up only two hits and striking out seven.
The Pirates and Cubs will play again tonight at 7:50 on WCCS.
