State Senator Joe Pittman is reiterating his call for Governor Tom Wolf to visit the people of Indiana and Armstrong counties that would be affected by the state joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, better known as RGGI.
Last October, Governor Wolf issued an executive order to the State Department of Environmental Protection to join RGGI, saying that the move would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and take on the issue of climate change while generating economic growth. Opponents say that what it will do is create a carbon tax on employers engaged in the energy generation industry and it would cost thousands of jobs across the state.
In a letter written by Pittman on July 14th, he said that while the Wolf Administration claimed to be concerned about communities affected by RGGI, he has not seen Wolf come out to engage the public in Indiana and Armstrong Counties on what will be done to replace the lost jobs, rehabilitate the shuttered power plants, and replace the lost revenue to local governments and school districts.
Pittman said that with the strong bi-partisan support shown for House Bill 2025 in the State House, he hopes the Governor will reconsider his approach towards implementing the carbon tax and “demonstrate a true effort by engaging the General Assembly in determining the most appropriate path forward.”
