Folks in Indiana Borough are pretty well fed up with people putting off fireworks, prompting the borough police department to issue a public statement on what’s legal…and what’s not.
With numerous complaints received in the past week, a police news release warn that not only are there strict state laws that regulate fireworks, but that there is also an Indiana Borough ordinance that “prohibits loud, unnecessary and unusual noise which either annoys, disturbs, injures, or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace, of safety of others.”
A state law enacted in 2017 does permit consumer fireworks but large ‘display” fireworks such as mortar and aerial shells and anything containing more than fifty milligrams of explosive material are illegal.
Furthermore, consumer fireworks cannot be discharged within 150 feet of an occupied structure, whether or not there is someone in that structure at that time. Most residential and business structures in Indiana Borough are less than 150 feet.
Fireworks-related complaints can be reported 24 hours a day by calling police at 349-2121, or in the event of an emergency, by calling 911.
