As part of the Independence Day holiday weekend, many people will head outdoors to cook, and whether you are roasting hot dogs over a campfire, or putting steaks on the grill, people are being reminded to celebrate safely.
Terry Gardner of the Homer City Fire Department said that people should be prepared for any emergency when they are cooking out this weekend. He recommends having a fire extinguisher on hand for any emergencies and he he also says people should take the grill into the backyard itself.
He said one of the big things with campfires and bonfires is to make sure that things are cleared out at your fire ring before lighting a fire in it.
Gardner also said that a fire or even smoldering coals should not be left unattended. Make sure that the fire is completely out before leaving the scene, and Gardner recommends drowning a fire, stirring the coals and drowning it again and make sure that there is no warmth coming from the grill or the fire pit.
With the ground being this dry, an errant spark or hot spot could set off a brush fire, so please be careful this weekend.
