Families who want to have their children attend Catholic school in the Diocese of Greensburg but are concerned about the cost will be able to take advantage of a scholarship fund initiative.
At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, the Diocese announced the creation of the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership. The initiative was founded by several anonymous donors from the business community who were inspired by Saint Pope John Paul II, according to Bishop Edward Malesic. He added that this will give those who thought a Catholic school education was out of reach due to price a reason to apply.
The anonymous group has committed $2.4 million in tuition assistance this year, and along with another $1.7 million in existing donations from the state Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program makes $4.1 million in scholarships and tuition assistance available in the diocese.
Families that are interested in participating in the partnership will be partnered with an outreach and admissions coordinator to help them through the application process. There are several requirements that would need to be met, including demonstrating a financial need, expressing a willingness to cover a portion of the cost of education, and support the child’s spiritual and academic progress, among other requirements. Those who want to apply need not be a member of a church in the diocese to receive the assistance, but they must show commitment to the school as well as their parish or denominational church through the donation of time, talent or treasure as they can.
