Indiana County’s unemployment rate remained high in the month of May, but did start to fall.
The PA Department of Labor and Industry says that in May, Indiana County’s unemployment rate went down three percentage points to 12.9 percent. The statewide unemployment rate also went down by three percentage points, and it is now 13.1 percent. The department says that the data continues to reflect the effect of business closures due to Covid-19 and the evolving mitigation efforts to contain the disease.
Indiana County’s unemployment rate is among the lowest of the surrounding counties. The lowest unemployment rate in the area is in Jefferson County, at 12.5 percent. Clearfield has a 13.2 percent unemployment rate. Both Armstrong and Cambria have 13.7 percent unemployment and Westmoreland County has the highest unemployment rate at 14 percent.
The total number of non-farm jobs went up by 5.2 percent from April to May. That represents an increase of 1,400 in the number of jobs to 28,400 in May. Mining, logging and construction saw the highest gain in the month at 1,000 jobs added, while leisure and hospitality had the second largest gains in the county with 300 jobs added. All other super sectors remained virtually unchanged.
