For the first time, Chronic Waste Disease has been reported in Indiana County.
The state Game Commission said last week that “at least one” case of CWD was found in deer in Indiana, Cambria, Franklin, Huntingdon, Jefferson, Juniata, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties in 2019. The positive cases were part of a release in which the commission reported 204 cases for the year. Bedford County’s 99 cases were the most in the state, followed by Fulton County and Blair County.
The Game Commission says the positive tests caused it to expand the Disease Management Area designations, covering areas at or near existing DMAs. Indiana County is included in two DMAs, one because of Chronic Waste Disease in a deer at a captive deer facility and the other because the disease was found in a yearling buck killed when it was hit by a vehicle.
