Ryan Blaney edged Ricky Stenhouse Junior by a nose to win the GEICO 500 at Talladega yesterday. It was a wild finish with a wreck at the end as the drivers crossed the finish line, with Aric Almirola crossing the line with his car going backwards. Denny Hamlin finished fourth while Erik Jones took fifth. Blaney’s winning margin was just seven-one thousandths of a second.
Before the race, all of the drivers in the starting lineup were joined by 82-year-old car owner Richard Petty as they pushed Bubba Wallace’s number-43 Chevy to the front of the grid. Wallace was in contention for the win before fuel issues caused him to pit late. He finished 14th. After the race, Wallace ran to the fence and greeted fans, later apologizing for not wearing a mask.
