More than 500 people turned out for a Black Lives Matter rally and vigil on Sunday in Downtown Indiana.
IRMC Park and the sidewalks along Philadelphia Street were packed with supporters attending the “Gathering for Justice, In Peace, With Love from Indiana County” that was meant to serve as a vigil for George Floyd and others who died due to racial injustice. The rally included a performance by Blairsville drummer Josh Williams and speeches from Gerald Smith, Poom Taylor, Katrina Laude, County Commissioner Sherene Hess and others.
One of the vigil’s organizers, Alex Clark said he wanted to focus on peace and respect in this event.
After the vigil, a group of younger protestors took to the streets for a march in Indiana Borough. The group marched down Seventh Street and onto Oakland Avenue, Grant Street, and back onto Seventh to Mack Park before going back the same route and to the Indiana County Courthouse where they continued their peaceful protest.
