Thursday’s protest by barbers, hairstylists and their supporters against Governor Tom Wolf’s business closure orders due to Coronavirus raised the attention of Indiana Borough Police as they say the protest gathering was in violation of the borough’s emergency declaration.
According to a news release from police, the protest was originally set to be held on courthouse property, but instead it was held on the sidewalk of 800 Philadelphia Street. While the protest was a peaceful one, police say that it violated the emergency declaration set in place by Indiana Mayor George Hood, and extended by Borough Council via resolution through May 31st. That declaration stated that gatherings of more than five people on borough-owned property were “specifically prohibited.”
Indiana Borough Police are estimating that between 30 and 50 people took part for an hour and fifteen minutes. Police say that the investigation remains open at this time. Police also say that they are “committed to open lines of communication and discussion with all residents and committed to constant dialogue that focuses on enhancing the quality of life of all its citizens.”
